… you are Christ’s … (1 Cor 3:23).
“Remember who you are and Whose you are.” Often I heard those words from my father as I left the house to be with friends. Dad’s words didn’t always impact me as they should have, but I’ve never forgotten them. Dad was encouraging me to behave in a way that would both honor him and the One I claimed to be my Lord.
Anyone who reads 1 Corinthians realizes that those to whom Paul writes frequently failed to live lives that honored their teachers – be it Paul, Apollos, Cephas, or most importantly, Jesus. And so Paul exhorts them to remember who they are and Whose they are.
Who am I? I am a rebellious sinner for whom Jesus, the Christ, freely chose to die, that my sins might be forgiven, and He might claim me as His own. Whose am I? I am Christ’s. I belong to Him. I am His. And therefore, Paul will write, whatever I do, I am to do it all to the glory of God.
My Dad wanted me to remember that whatever I did (or didn’t do) would reflect upon both my earthly and eternal family. So does Paul.
Prayer:
Lord, today, may all I do glorify and honor You, and therefore be for the temporal and eternal good of others. Amen.
