When the Challenges are Great, We Believe in the Spirit

Across the country, anger has flared and violence has erupted in our cities. Even in this setting — especially in this setting — we long for people to be drawn by God’s grace. We yearn for them to see it in us, to be enticed into God’s ever widening and ever welcoming church.

In this message, preached earlier this year, Bryan Chapell, senior pastor of Grace Presbyterian Church, assures his listeners that even now — in Minneapolis, Louisville, and St. Louis — our differences and difficulties are not beyond the work of the Holy Spirit. Even in this environment, Chapell says, “We do not have to give up.” We are His witnesses because the same Spirit who worked in the life of Christ and the apostles, who was present when the gospel moved forward into a pagan and secular culture that was militantly opposed to it — that same Holy Spirit is ours today.

He strengthens us, empowers us to be His witnesses, and “to face challenges that are so great and so difficult that apart from Him, we could not endure.”
