Overture Decisions for June 25 and June 26

PCA General Assembly in June

The Committees of Commissioners made the following recommendations during their evening session on June 25 and morning session on June 26.

Overtures that Address the Subject of Sexuality

Overtures Committee has voted to recommend that the Assembly answer Overture 42, “Establish Study Committee on Sexuality,” in the affirmative as amended. The vote was 72-54-0.

Overtures Committee has voted to recommend that the Assembly answer Overture 30, 44, and 45 in reference to its actions on Overture 42.

Overtures Committee has voted to recommend that the Assembly answer Overture 37, “Assembly Statement on Same-sex Attraction,” with reference to its answer to Overture 4. The vote was 71-52-2. 

Overtures Committee has voted to recommend that the Assembly answer Overture 28, “Affirmations and Denials regarding Homosexuality,” with reference to its answer to Overture 4. The vote was 91-34-0. 

Overtures that Address the Subject of Domestic Abuse and Sexual Assault

Overtures Committee has voted to recommend that the Assembly answer Overture 7, “Form an Ad Interim Committee to Address Matters Related to Domestic Abuse, Domestic Oppression, and Sexual Assault,” in the affirmative as amended. The vote was 104-20-0.

Overtures Committee has voted to recommend that the Assembly answer Overtures 10,13, 20, 26, 31, 38, 43, and 47 with reference to the committee’s answer to Overture 7. The vote was 122-2-0.

Overtures that Request Changes to Allow Non-ordained Person to Serve on Committees and Boards

Overtures Committee has voted to recommend that the Assembly answer Overture 8, “Amend BCO 14-1.10, 14-1.11, and 14-1.12 to Allow Non-ordained Persons to serve on Committees and Boards,” in the negative. The vote was 84-38-0.

Overtures Committee has voted to recommend that the Assembly answer Overtures 14, 19, 21, and 32 with reference to its answer to Overture 8. The vote was 111-4-4.

Overtures that Request Action Regarding an Agency

Overtures Committee has voted to recommend that the Assembly answer Overtures 2, “Encourage CTS toward Growth and Release from Assembly Oversight,” in the negative. The vote was 79-39-5.

The Committee of Commissioners for MTW voted to recommend that the Assembly answer Overture 41, “Direct CMTW to Amend its Guidelines to Implement CMTW’s ‘Statement on Valuing Women in MTW,’ so that only Ordained Elders Will Be Allowed to Serve in the Roles of Team Leader, Regional Director, and International Director within MTW,” in the negative. The vote was 27-10. 

Other Remaining Overtures

Overtures Committee has voted to recommend that the Assembly answer Overtures 40, “Overture for Sessions to Acknowledge and Support Women Leaders without Delay or More Divisiveness,” in the negative. The vote was 108-9-2.

Overtures Committee has voted to ask the General Assembly moderator to rule Overtures 46, “Reaffirm PCA’s Commitment Regarding the Sanctity of Life and Our Stance Against Abortion in Particular,” out of order because it asks the GA to re-affirm a previous action. The vote was 115-2-1.

Overtures Committee has voted to recommend that the Assembly answer Overtures 48, “Make a Stronger Statement regarding Abortion,” in the negative. The vote was 90-26-6.
