General Assembly Updates: Overtures Committee Actions for Monday, June 28

General Assembly Updates

The Overtures Committee took the following action during its Committee of Commissioners meeting on June 28. All of these votes will be affirmed or rejected by the 48th General Assembly:

– Voted to recommend answering in the affirmative Overture 9, “Amend RAO 15-6.s.2), 3) Regarding the Number of Members of the Overtures Committee Required to File a Minority Report” as amended. Vote was 88-19. Read the amended language here.

-Answer Overture 10, “Amend RAO 15-6.s by Adding New Paragraphs Dealing with the Content of Minority Reports” as amended in the affirmative. Vote was 74-51-3. Read the amended language here.

-Recommend answering Overture 17 “Amend RAO 9-3” as amended in the affirmative. The vote was 111-7-1. Read the amended overture here.

– The committee voted to recommend that the Assembly answer Overture 1, “Amend BCO 8-7 Regarding Chaplains,” in the negative. The vote was 114-9-2. Grounds will come later.

– The Overtures Committee votes to recommend answering Overture 5, “Amend BCO 20-4; 24-3; 24-4 Regarding Election of Pastor, Associate Pastor, and Officers” in the affirmative as amended. The vote was 122-3-1. Read the amended overture here.

– The committee voted to recommend that the Assembly answer Overture 31, “Amend BCO 22 Process for Assistant to Associate Pastor,” in the affirmative as amended. The vote was 113-11-3. Read the amended language here. 

– Voted to recommend that the Assembly answer Overture 38, “Commend Human Sexuality Report,” in the affirmative. The vote was 124-3-0.

– The OC has voted to recommend that the Assembly answer Overture 37, “Amend BCO 21-4 and 24-1 Clarifying Moral Requirements for Church Office,” in the affirmative as amended. The vote was 82-43-1. Read the amended overture here. A minority report will follow.

The Overtures Committee voted to recommend that the Assembly answer Overture 16, “Amend BCO 7 by Addition to Disqualify Same-sex Attracted Men from Ordination,” by reference to Overtures 37 and 38. The vote was 74-51-2.
