Devotion for September 26
By Mark Bates

Praise the Lord, all nations! Extol him, all peoples! For great is his steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord (Psalm 117:1-2)!

While cleaning up after VBS, I overheard a woman say that she had never had a hot Krispy Kreme. I was astounded. So, I started sharing with her the good news of Krispy Kremes. “These are not ordinary doughnuts, but are hot, fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth sweetness like manna from heaven.” I must have carried on about the delight of Krispy Kreme doughnuts for another five minutes. Why was I so pushy? Because I knew that if she ever tasted it, she would enjoy it.

In Psalm 117, we find God’s people doing the something similar. While this psalm—like all psalms—is a song of worship to God, it is a song that is sung to the nations imploring them to join us in worship. Why do we invite the nations to join us in worship? Because “great is his steadfast love towards us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever.” That is, we know of the sweetness of His love and want others to share in it.

The more our hearts are gripped by God’s love for us, the more passionate we will be about inviting the nations to worship Him. What this shows is that a lack of missionary zeal is not a mission’s problem, but a worship problem. So, remember God’s steadfast love for you. As you do, join in the work of God’s people by inviting the nations to join you in praising Him.

Prayer: Father, thank you that your steadfast love endures forever. Forgive me for failing to remember how amazing it is. May your grace so overpower my heart that I will worship you by inviting the world to praise you for your majesty. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
