Devotion for January 19
By byFaith Staff

Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith (Gal. 6:9-10).

Christians can be so fickle. Sometimes we reason that because others do not love the Lord, we don’t have to be kind to them. We become like those cult members who think it’s okay to take advantage of us in airports because we aren’t honoring their god.

Other times we use social media or simple gossip to rage at believers we think are not living up to our God’s standards of thought or behavior. We rationalize our rage with excuses about others being undeserving of our kindness or respect.

The Apostle Paul declaws all arguments for acting with thoughtless disregard for anyone’s soul. He, who makes the strongest arguments for correct doctrine, nonetheless urges doing good toward all – especially those in the household of faith.

Never would Paul argue that we should be unconcerned about thoughts or deeds that dishonor God. Yet, because he wants others to love God, the apostle reminds us that the gospel is powerfully made known by expressions of goodness foreign to our character apart from the work of grace in us.

Always the Spirit urges us to act on behalf of others, to show the love of Jesus Christ to every person – in ways small and great. As we do good to all, we honor our Savior and show the priorities of his kingdom to our world – that’s our mission!

Prayer:
Father, as I have the opportunity today to show the realities of Christ’s grace, enable me to do good to all, especially those in the household of faith.
