The 53rd General Assembly approved an overture calling for the Presbyterian Church in America to “observe a solemn day of fasting and prayer for the revival and renewal of the church.” The overture specified that the day be set aside in the month of September. 

RE Mel Duncan, moderator of the 53rd General Assembly, said that presbyteries should appoint a suitable day in September 2026, or as soon after as is practical, “on which congregations, RUF campus ministries, officers, and members will humble themselves before the Lord, fast, and pray. We are called to heartfelt repentance over the sins of ministers, officers, members, and congregations, and to earnest petition for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, the blessing of God upon the preached Word, the conversion of the lost, the planting of faithful churches, and the advance of the gospel in our communities, on college campuses, and throughout the world.”

Duncan appointed Rev. Rhett Dodson, teaching elder in Ohio Presbytery, and Mr. Olin McNeely, a ruling elder in Calvary Presbytery, to explain the purpose, biblical background, and significance of prayer and fasting as well as some practical guidelines.

And as noted in the overture, Duncan has invited sister churches from the North American Presbyterian and Reformed Council to join in the day of prayer and fasting. He also encourages presbyteries to invite like-minded local evangelical congregations to join.
