Devotion for March 9
By Bryan Chapell

We were gentle among you, like a nursing mother taking care of her own children. So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us (1 Thess. 2:7-8).

The Apostle Paul describes his ministry not only as sharing God’s Word, but also sharing his life in affection for others. Our purpose in the body of Christ should not be seen as merely mouthing God’s love but mimicking it.

Others will hear his Word from us only as they see his heart in us. Church is not only a place to declare God’s Word but a place where selfless care demonstrates it.

The power of selfless care was demonstrated powerfully in our church by a childless woman named Marlene. She desperately wanted children but married too late in life. She didn’t let that stop her spiritual mothering.

The neighborhood children of all races, economic backgrounds, and educational differences became Marlene’s spiritual children. Though their backgrounds were often rough, she was as gentle (and firm when needed) among them as a mother taking care of her own children. She embraced all, often filling in the gaps for absent biological parents.

This godly woman provides us a glimpse of our gracious God, whose grace and mercy embraces all of us with his unmerited and unlimited grace.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, in response to your unlimited grace, help me share and show your love, selflessly caring for the members of your family — just as you care for me.
