Devotion for February 8

Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows (Matthew 10:28-31).

Church forefathers captured the essence of Christ’s assurance with this question and answer:

Question: What is your only comfort in life and death?

Answer: “That I am not my own but belong with body and soul, both in life and in death, to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood and has set me free from all the power of the devil. He also preserves me in such a way that, without the will of my Heavenly Father, not a hair can fall from my head; indeed, all this must work together for my salvation. Therefore, by his Holy Spirit, he also assures me of eternal life, and makes me heartily willing and ready to live for him.”

The One who cares for the sparrows, gave his life for you. You are worth more than many sparrows and can count on his eternal care. When it’s hard to believe that, still believe. This truth will be your abiding comfort in life and in death – and forever! Believe it, and rest easy.

Prayer:
Lord, help me to live for my Savior, not with a spirit of fear, but with the certainty than not even a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Heavenly Father.
