Devotion for February 10
By Bryan Chapell

You know how, like a father with his children, we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory. (1 Thess. 2:11-12)

The Marlboro Man and Michelob “Weekends” ads represent the manhood of a biblical father about as well as a five-year-old in a cowboy hat resembles John Wayne. The strength of character required to be the head of a home is not displayed through outward appearances but developed through a heart of daily sacrifice.

As a young man, I witnessed the example of such true manhood through my father. His job required him to be on the road, and his travel allowance could have made his hotel overnights quite pleasant.

But rather than take advantage of the perks, my father would drive through the night to be with his children at breakfast. He walked (and drove) in a manner worthy of the God who had traveled from heaven to earth to bless His family.

My father’s example made clear that a biblical family head selflessly reflects the One who gave of himself so we would be blessed as His family!

Prayer: Heavenly Father, you have not only saved me but also made me a member of your eternal family! Please help me to live and love selflessly for the sake of the family you are grooming for heaven through my earthly care.
