Devotion for August 31
By Bryan Chapell

The Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord (John 10:17-18).

Christ came to earth with his death in mind. The cross wasn’t a surprise ending. His heart of all-consuming love did not deprive him of sovereign knowledge of his sacrificial death for our sins.

The One who gave the prophets vision of his provision knowingly fulfilled his own prophecies. He became the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world not simply because of his enemies’ plots but because of his own eternal plan.

Our Lord Jesus knew the whole story before it ever began, and still he came to earth and willingly laid down his life. He knew what was coming and kept on coming!

This is true of your life, too. Jesus knows your sins past, present, and future and still he comes to you by the truth of Scripture and the witness of the Holy Spirit in your heart.

He did not turn from offering himself for a sinful world, and he will not turn from offering himself to you. You may not know how much you will need him, but he does – and still he offers himself to you.

By offering himself as a sacrifice for a sinful world, Jesus bore witness to his all-surpassing love and grace. He is the relentless Savior who knew the worst about this world and came to save its sinners. He also knows the worst about you and graciously offered himself for your soul.

The One who knew what was coming and kept on coming, comes to you now. Come to him!

Prayer:
Jesus, thank you for coming to the cross to take away the sins of the world. Assure me that a love great enough for the world is gracious enough for me so that I come to you now by believing you are my Savior.
