Calling All Dallas Golfers
By Natalie Atwell

On June 26, PCA Retirement and Benefits (RBI) is hosting a golf tournament to benefit Ministerial Relief, a fund that supports disabled and retired pastors as well as widowed pastor’s wives. All participants at General Assembly, as well as local church members, are invited to tee off for the cause.

Most PCA members don’t know the recipients of Ministerial Relief funding.

“These are invisible people,” says Gary Campbell, president of RBI. “For a lot of us, these are widows [we] don’t know. But I’ve met them. It’s a great need and one that will grow dramatically in the course of the next five to 10 years.”

With more baby boomers reaching retirement, RBI is looking for ways to help the Ministerial Relief fund grow. According to an actuarial report RBI commissioned from PricewaterhouseCoopers, it’s likely the needed funds will reach $5 million annually by 2035. That is a long climb from RBI’s current annual income of around $750,000.

This year’s tournament will take place at Cedar Crest Golf Course in Dallas; the tournament has been a tradition for 12 years, growing from 20 golfers to over 80 at last year’s event. In the past, participants have almost exclusively been PCA pastors, but the event organizers hope to expand participation by reaching out to members of PCA churches in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

“Our hope is that this will give the membership in the Dallas-Fort Worth area a wider exposure to the denomination,” Campbell says. “I don’t know if there’s a better way to do that than to come out and play golf with pastors who you’ve heard about and haven’t had the opportunity to meet.”

Campbell says he is also optimistic that this move will bring out more women to the golf course.
