The pulpit search committee of Briarwood Presbyterian Church has nominated Scott Redd to serve as its next senior minister. Redd is currently president of Reformed Theological Seminary’s campus in Washington, D.C. If elected, Redd will be the third senior minister in the congregation’s history.
The announcement was made to the congregation on Sunday by Billy Ball, a ruling elder and chairman of the pulpit committee.
“Our pulpit search committee has been amazed at how the Lord has directed this process, drawing the committee together, uniting us in purpose, and leading us to Scott,” Ball said in a video announcing Redd’s selection. “Our committee believes he is the man God has called to Briarwood.”
Redd preaches and teaches regularly at churches in the D.C. area, including Fourth Presbyterian Church (EPC) in Bethesda, Maryland, where he is an ordained teaching elder, and Grace Downtown Church (PCA) in Washington, D.C., where he serves as scholar in residence.
In his 25 years of ministry Redd has served six congregations, four of them within the PCA.
“Throughout these years, the Lord has deepened my love for the church and strengthened my commitment to proclaiming the whole counsel of God as a vital part of gospel discipleship in the local church,” Redd said in a statement. “I am profoundly humbled to be considered for this role in such a vibrant and faithful church community. I believe God has much in store for Briarwood in the days ahead, and I prayerfully hope to be part of the work He is doing.”
In addition to teaching at RTS, Redd has taught at The Catholic University of America, the Augustine Theological Institute in Malta, the International Training Institute in the Mediterranean basin, C. S. Lewis Institute, and for Third Millennium Ministries.
The announcement of Redd’s selection also came with commendations from Redd’s friends in the Reformed world. RTS Chancellor Ligon Duncan, praised Redd’s scholarship and pastoral heart.
“For over a dozen years, Scott has served with me at RTS, giving tremendous leadership as President of Reformed Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C., and I have come to know him as a man of deep biblical conviction, pastoral warmth, and theological clarity. He is a gifted preacher, a thoughtful leader, and a humble servant of Christ,” he said in a statement.
Redd will be visiting as a candidate June 6-8 and preaching during both morning worship services on June 8. The congregational meeting to vote on the call will take place June 15. Pending the approval of Evangel Presbytery, Redd will begin his role in early August.
Redd grew up in a military family and earned his undergraduate degree at The College of William & Mary. He has a master’s degree from RTS and his Ph.D. in Semitic and Egyptian languages and literature from The Catholic University of America. He and his wife, Jennifer, have five daughters.
