12 Attendance Statistics from the 53rd General Assembly

According to the official record keepers, 2,456 commissioners attended the 53rd General Assembly in Louisville, the highest number of commissioners for an Assembly in the PCA’s history, topping the previous record of 2,385 commissioners who gathered in Birmingham in 2022.

What can we learn from analyzing the attendance data? Here are some items of interest.

1. The Assembly was composed of 1,637 teaching elders and 819 ruling elders. Ruling elders accounted for 33% of commissioners, on par with the historical average. 

2. The five states most represented among registered commissioners:

Georgia 239
Florida 188

South Carolina 183

3. The five cities most represented among registered commissioners, based on the church’s address:

Birmingham, AL 49
Nashville, TN 32
Greenville, SC 28

10. Commissioners represented all 50 states. Vermont had one commissioner. Maine, North Dakota, Nevada, and South Dakota had two commissioners each. There were also 15 commissioners from Canada. 

11. Nine presbyteries had no ruling elders in attendance:

    • Iowa 
    • Korean Central
    • Korean Eastern
    • Korean Northeastern
    • Korean Northwest
    • Korean Southwest
    • Korean Southwest Orange County
    • Northern New England
    • West Hudson

12. The following presbyteries had the highest proportion of ruling elders relative to their overall attendance:

    • Tidewater: 15 of 27 commissioners
    • Illiania: 7 of 13 commissioners
    • North Illinois: 11 of 21 commissioners
    • Houston Metro: 23 of 45 commissioners
    • James River: 19 of 38 commissioners

Bonus: Congratulations to Ruling Elder Dean Abbott and Ruling Elder Trevor Zuroff for representing the alphabetical bookends of the commissioner list. When arranged alphabetically, the first commissioner listed is Abbott from New Life Presbyterian in La Mesa, California, and the last commissioner is Zuroff from Christ Church in Katy, Texas.
