Youth Conferences Emphasize Leadership
By

This summer, churches have the opportunity to send prospective young leaders to one of three Youth eXcelling in Leadership (YXL) conferences. Held the second week of July in Tennessee, Pennsylvania, and Colorado, the conferences are regionally based, but united in philosophy to serve youth who exhibit leadership and a desire for spiritual development. “Through practical teaching and preaching, intense worship experiences, hands-on leadership activities, and intentional relationship building, students are challenged to further develop their biblical worldview,” says Danny Mitchell, program director for YXL at Covenant College. “They’re then able to take what they’ve learned and put it into practice.”

YXL at Covenant College will focus on the church. The Rev. John Chung, main speaker of the conference and youth pastor at Korean Presbyterian Church in St. Louis, will address the topic, along with Dr. Brian Cosby, YXL’s theologian in residence and the associate pastor of youth and families at Carriage Lane Presbyterian Church in Peachtree City, Ga.

Refreshing Mountain Camp in Ephrata, Pa., will host YXL Northeast. This year’s speakers include Stephen Nichols, a professor at Lancaster Bible College and author of several books on church history, as well as Chad Brewer, Reformed University Fellowship (RUF) campus minister at the University of Minnesota.

Students in the western U.S. will be welcomed back to Colorado’s Horn Creek Conference Center, the site where the YXL West Conference started in 1977. The main speakers will be Britton Wood, RUF campus minister at Stanford University, and Ryan Moore, RUF campus minister at the University of Alabama. This year’s theme is Fit 4 Service. “As students leave YXL,” says conference director Patrick Tebbano, “they will not only understand the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ more, but they will see how He has uniquely and carefully made them and how the Spirit is leading them to build the kingdom.”
