An Army of 1 Percent
By Staff

One percent — that’s what Mission to the World (MTW) wants each church to commit to international missions. But it’s not 1 percent of the financial budget — it’s 1 percent of members.

In 2018, MTW unveiled its “1%” campaign, urging churches to prayerfully commit by 2019 to sending 1 percent of their members as new missionaries.

There are 16,591 People Groups in the World
  • 6,741 of them are unreached
  • 3.11 billion people are unreached
  • 42.2 percent of the world’s population is unreached

With 287,746 members in the denomination, 1 percent would be 2,877 new missionaries. Maps on the MTW website show what it might look like if the 129 MTW missionaries currently based in Europe added 598 more missionaries to their ranks.

And that’s just in Europe.

For churches interested in the challenge but not sure where to begin, MTW encourages them to begin with prayer — praying that the Holy Spirit will prompt members to commit themselves to international missions. In addition churches can provide opportunities to talk about missions through conferences, praying corporately for missionaries, offering education such as a Perspectives course, and teaching about The Great Commission.

MTW’s website also provides resources to help churches think about promoting missions, including prayer guides, communication ideas, videos, and information on short-term vision trips.

PCA members do not need to commit to working with MTW, but MTW wants churches to commit to sending all the new missionaries to the field by 2026.
