The situation at Penn State University is a tragedy, but a clear-eyed assessment would have to conclude that it is not unexpected. Since at least the 1960s, government funded institutions have steadily and now almost completely pushed aside the moral and ethical framework provided by Christian faith. Now, when the inevitable consequences show up, we should not act surprised.

A quick look at recent headlines from public college and high school campuses make at least the first half of the point. Christian groups have been restricted at the Air Force Academy and at Vanderbilt. A Christian singing group encountered firestorm of criticism when they said a gay student couldn’t be a member.

Almost 30 years ago I was involved in a situation not so horrendous as the Penn State tragedy, but one which may prove instructive.
