Theology Meets Theater at Covenant College

Theology and theater will collide at the American premiere of A Bright Particular Star, presented February 15-16 and 22-23 by Covenant College’s Department of Communication.

The award-winning play follows George MacDonald, famous 19th-century novelist and theologian, and his daughter Lilia, a young girl with a passion for the stage. Lilia’s journey is urged on by admirers such as Mark Twain, Lewis Carroll, and Kate Terry, as she attempts to follow her passion for theater in a society which sees actors and actresses as little better than prostitutes.

A Bright Particular Star, written by Canadian playwright Ron Reed, was produced in May 2006 at Vancouver’s celebrated Pacific Theatre, and was originally workshopped at Atlanta’s “Art Within” writers’ program.

Dubbed “compelling, worthwhile, [and] truly affecting” by The Vancouver Courier and “a wholly holy conflict” by the (Vancouver) Westender, the play will be directed by associate professor of communication Camille Hallstrom, and will be performed at Covenant College’s Sanderson Hall auditorium on February 15, 16, and 22 at 8:00 p.m., and February 23 at 2:30 p.m.

Combining my favorite author, my favorite college, Shakespeare and one of my favorite young people all made viewing A Bright Particlar Star a wonderful evening. Sarah Hamilton (I've known her since she was born) as MacDonald's daughter was believable and transformed the good play into a masterpiece production. THANKS to Ron Reed, Camille and all the actors and crew. And thanks to Covenant whose emphasis on culture/arts and Christianity stellar.
