The Prodigal God Resource Materials Now Available
Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City recently launched a new treatment of Tim Keller’s bestselling book The Prodigal God to include a companion film, discussion guide, and expanded Web resources (www.theprodigalgod.com).
“The Prodigal God is for both curious outsiders and established insiders of the faith, both to those Jesus calls younger brothers and those he calls elder brothers,” says Keller, senior pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church.
The Prodigal God materials all point to the same message—that, as Keller says, “the gospel is neither religion nor irreligion, neither morality nor immorality, but something else entirely.” Keller has said that this parable is the account of the gospel upon which he has built Redeemer Presbyterian Church, a church of 5,000 in central Manhattan.
The Prodigal God six-week experience is designed for both church-wide campaigns and small groups, and consists of a 37-minute DVD of Keller exegeting the parable, the bestselling Prodigal God book, and a six-week study guide based on the film and the book (which includes facilitator and pastor notes).
“This is the first video-based small group curriculum that Keller has done with a major publisher,” said Scott Kauffman, who oversees publishing projects at Redeemer. “The parable of the prodigal is Tim’s life message.”
Keller has worked from his own preaching notes to develop a set of preaching resources for pastors, allowing them to preach grace in a series of five sermons tied to the main theme of each week’s study.
“We strongly believe that the gospel is learned in community, so we’d really like to see whole churches use this curriculum together,” said Kauffman.
