The History Behind the Reformed Presbyterian Church, Evangelical Synod Now Digitized

Wayne Sparkman, director of the PCA Historical Center, recently completed a major project, digitizing George P. Hutchinson’s important work, The History Behind the Reformed Presbyterian Church, Evangelical Synod. This book, long out of print, is not only a history of the RPCES, the denomination that merged with the PCA in 1982, it’s the story of American Presbyterianism through the mid-seventies.

Interested readers can access the book, chapter-by-chapter, through a table of contents page on the PCA Historical Center website by clicking here. And they may want to check back periodically, as footnotes are updated and hyperlinked to the original documents Hutchinson used. These links, Sparkman believes, will not only add to the usefulness of this resource, they’ll also demonstrate the value of the Historical Center, where most of the original documents are preserved. To see a list of these added resources, visit http://www.pcahistory.org/findingaids/rpces/history/sources.html.

Sparkman hopes to provide ministerial candidates with easily accessible histories and other documents to assist them as they prepare for licensure and ordination. But everyone in the church benefits, since access is not limited. “Hutchinson’s book is an especially readable work,” Sparkman said, “and we think people will enjoy having it available.”
