Overtures Committee Rejects Declaration Regarding Homosexuals in Military

The Overtures Committee of the 37th General Assembly rejected Overture 18 from Eastern Pennsylvania Presbytery yesterday.

The overture, titled “A Declaration Concerning Homosexuals in the Military,” would have authorized the moderator of the Assembly to hand-deliver a letter to President Barack Obama, reminding him of what “has in all history been the unambiguous instruction of God our Creator regarding sexual relationships among mankind.”

The recommended letter reads in part, “The Presbyterian Church in America, as one expression of God’s Church in the United States, seeks lovingly to warn that your publicly announced intention to normalize and commend homosexual relationships for members of the Armed Forces would deny Divine purpose in the very Creation of Man, and would contend against Divine law that has been revealed for the great good of all Mankind.” The letter also would have reminded the President that, “This Nation’s prosperity and security is ultimately dependent upon the good pleasure and Providence of God.”

In rejecting the overture, the committee stated, “The proposal fails to meet the standard of the Westminster Confession of Faith 31.4—the case is not extraordinary and no civil magistrate has required such advice.”

I am very thankful that the Committe has rejected this Overture. I work with many gay individuals and most of them have a wall build against anything Christian. By rejecting this overture there is possibility that conversation and bridgebuilding can take place with the gay community in order to present the Gospel of Grace.

Again, thank you committee. I hope GA follows your advise. Please see my comments under the "Danvers statement" resolution elsewhere on this site.

And to be consistent, let's also hope the GA follows the committee's advice regarding "Study Committees" for women's roles too.

This is something to travail about. I'm saddened that the PCA wouldn't take this issue as seriously as the Decalogue. The PCA's decision wouldn't affect homosexual conversations with the church even if it had passed this overture.

I am former member of Granada PCA, Miami, Fl. and Elder Emeritus. For a long time, I have wished the church at large had had a plan of evangelism centered in the local church. They could have reached out on a caring basis and gain confidences in the community. Some would reject but some would have accepted. It is easy for us to reject such behavior, it is harder to love them to/for Jesus. My youngest son was a homosexual who died at 49 years of age. He had rejected my efforts to "change" him. However,a marvelous chaplain at Baptist hospital came along side and may have made an eternal difference. To God be the Glory
