Overture 24: Renewal as an Alternative to Strategic Plan

The Northwest Georgia Presbytery, with Overture 24, has asked the General Assembly to “Adopt ‘A Call for Renewal’ as an alternative to the 2010 Strategic Plan." The overture would leave the funding proposal for the Administrative Committee intact.

Overture 24, while praising the motives of the Plan’s authors, claims the Plan misdiagnoses the reasons for downward trends in the denomination. As a result, the overture says, it is “misguided in its program for spiritual renewal.” According to North Georgia, current negative trends are a consequence “of our unwillingness, as elders, to give ourselves wholeheartedly to what God, in His Word, has promised to bless for the health and extension of His kingdom ….”

The overture further states that the Plan, in the opinion of some, threatens to further divide the denomination, and that the most urgent need for the PCA is not a strategy, but a call to renew “our vowed commitment to the Biblical, Reformed, Confessional, and Presbyterian Faith….”

Where the Strategic Plan recommends “safe places” for theological discussion, more “seats at the table” for women, young people, and minorities, and “a closer working relationship with the global Church in the areas of missions,” Overture 24 proposes, as an alternative, 17 points for PCA renewal.

They, along with the entire overture, can be read here.

I wonder whatever happened to the Strategic Plan of 4 years ago that was passed by GA? Why was it left undone?

These plans are so difficult to implement in our structure. GA can recommend a plan but if the grass roots doesn't care for it, it's not going to go far. How many churches and presbyteries do their annual planning based on the GA plan? My guess would be < 10%. Probably more likely for the larger churches than the smaller ones.

The NW Georgia overture's specific suggestions sound Biblical and honorable. Why not a "both - and" with the fair sharing of the Strategic Plan?
