“L’Abri Conference California 2008” Seeks to Increase Relevance of Christian Faith

In all of his education over a number of years — encompassing eight universities — Californian Robert Brekke never met a Christian whose faith had an impact on his professional life.

“Christians in the arts are not alone, though they may feel that way,” said Brekke, who works in publications and the arts. “But we have a difficult time aligning our faith with creativity and intellectualism, and making it relevant to our professional lives.”
Brekke is helping organize “L’Abri Conference California 2008,” to be held July 31-August 3 in Roseville, Calif., at Valley Springs Presbyterian Church (PCA). The conference, centered on “thinking and living the way of Christ,” is the second of its kind in the state. Some 175 people from as far as Korea and England are expected to attend.

“Rather than withdraw from the world, we must engage it,” said Brekke. “We’re missing out as Christians in terms of engaging culture and being relevant.”

The conference models the original L’Abri community, founded in Switzerland in the 1950s by Dr. Francis and Edith Schaeffer. The California conference will feature a number of speakers, including Jerram Barrs, who serves as professor of Christian studies and contemporary culture at Covenant Seminary in St. Louis.

It seems to me that effort should be placed on: in depth study and growing in the WORD, and centering our time and efforts on reaching sinners for Christ - even active church attenders; the relevance stuff will follow.
