Fifty Seminars Slated for General Assembly

From pro-active solutions for churches in an economic downturn to a live debate on women as deaconesses, the 37th PCA General Assembly promises to offer something for everyone though the wide variety of timely, informative seminars slated for this year’s Assembly.

With more than 50 seminars scheduled, participants should expect to find a wide range of appealing topics. Niel Nielson, president of Covenant College, expressed his anticipation for this year’s General Assembly. “Even a quick glance at this year's schedule should whet everyone's appetite for the rich feast that we will enjoy in Orlando.”

Addressing one of the most hotly debated issues in the PCA today, Dr. Ligon Duncan and Dr. Tim Keller will be debating their positions on women as deaconesses. For a clearer understanding of each man’s point of view, click on byfaithonline.com’s “In the Church” section at the top of the page and scroll down for articles detailing each position.

In observance of John Calvin’s 500th birthday, there will be a particular focus this year on subjects related to Calvin, his teachings, and his writings, including several relating to art and culture. Dr. Doug Kelly, considered an expert on Calvin, will be one of the highly anticipated speakers.

Current cultural concerns influenced some of the new seminars this year. One seminar addresses wireless and mobile technology and what parents need to know about the potential dangers for kids. Another seminar responds to the growing economic downturn among churches and offers proactive solutions for how to respond to a reduction in giving.

A number of seminars are also offered that are geared specifically toward women, including two uniquely addressing the unexpected challenges of being married to a man who has been called to lead.

I think it is time for our PCA to wake up to the talents and compassion of women in the churches. I have no problem with the Bible directives, Men are to love their wives as God loves them. Women can teach and make decisions and get things done but get put down by the powers that be in the church. If our men were doing their jobs we would not need all the women doing the Pregnancy Resources for unwed women and Homes for abused women and children. Christ ministered to women. Jesus had compassion for women and helped to raise their status but women still make less money for doing more work than the men. As long as men are in control, it will not change. I accepted it more when I was young than now that I am old. Thanks.

Women can and ought to have a prominent role in the life of any Church. The problem though in some churches is that women are (and the male leadership is allowing it) assuming roles that Scripture declares are for men only. Those are roles of leadership over the Church (those biblical offices instituted: office of elder and deacon, both which are authoritative offices given that God instituted them). Women can do many things and should be allowed to do them, but when it comes to LEADING Christ's Church, God has given that to the sinful men.
