Conference + Work Project = Hope
“This may not be the most glamorous retreat you’ve ever attended,” said Barbara Warner, conference coordinator for Lagniappe Presbyterian Church in Bay St. Louis, Miss. “But it may well be the most rewarding.”
Lagniappe Presbyterian Church, formed in April 2006 to help restore the homes, businesses, and community of Bay St. Louis in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, will host a women’s conference/work project February 22-24. In addition to attending teaching sessions, the women will install donated landscaping at two new homes built by the church.
“Lagniappe means ‘that little something extra,’” said Warner. “And that’s what we’re hoping to do by installing this landscaping—add that ‘little something extra’ for people who have lost everything in Katrina.”
Lagniappe Presbyterian Church’s vision is to see all things restored for the kingdom of Christ, says Warner. “Our vision as Christian women is to reach those in need with the healing power of the gospel. A lot of women can’t do construction, but we can plant flowers and shrubs and bring beauty and color to a home. It’s the last bit of icing on the cake, the last bit of restoration, to say ‘this is the way things were before the storm.’”
Some 100 women will attend Lagniappe’s work project/women’s conference, “Holding on to Hope,” led by author Nancy Guthrie and worship leader Teresa Sugar, February 22-24.
