70 Attend Indy Arts Conference
Some 70 pastors, musicians, worship leaders, and artists from all over the country attended “Seeking and Sharing His Beauty,” a conference in September 2007 on the Church, art, and cultural renewal hosted by Redeemer Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Indianapolis, Ind., along with Mission to North America.
“We’ve gotten really good feedback,” said Jason Dorsey, senior pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian. “I hope people left with a broader perspective on how the church can engage culture, and realize that it will be unique in each case—every church should do what’s good for them, and be true to their own mission.”

Redeemer Indianapolis has modeled a strong emphasis on culture and the arts. The church leases space in its downtown building to 26 local artists and a local arts center, which hosts monthly art shows. The building also hosts a recently-launched charter high school focusing on liberal arts.
“We’re not seen so much as a church building as an arts and culture center,” said Dorsey. “Our goal is to break down the walls between the city, local neighborhoods, and the church, and to explore how the gospel intersects with engaging our neighbors.”
But this can be challenging, admits Dorsey. “At this conference, we were reminded that you can be as culturally savvy and relevant as possible, but there is still a point where the gospel needs to be presented. And at some point that may be offensive.”
