MTW Launches Church Plant in Ethiopia

Suki is a sprawling mountainside settlement of more than 10,000 people in Addis Ababa who struggle with deep poverty. With no sanitation and only three water taps for the entire community, the residents are plagued by all manner of communicable and noncommunicable diseases, including significant rates of child malnutrition, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS.

Mission to the World’s (MTW) Ethiopia team has hosted several short-term medical clinics in Suki during the past year through which it has met numerous families and community leaders. The team is quickly developing a network of families — including those from Orthodox, Protestant, and Muslim backgrounds — with whom it visits regularly for medical follow-up, prayer, and pastoral care. This spring, the government approved a proposal for a three-year community health project that will include medical clinics, family medical support, social work/counseling, clean-water and sanitation interventions, and small-family urban gardening.

Theology and Mercy
These efforts are laying the groundwork for a church plant in Suki, one that will be theologically rich and that stays committed to the team’s original call to acts of mercy.
