Cheely was a native of Hopewell, Va. He graduated from Wheaton College, Wheaton, Ill., earned his Master of Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary, and was presented with the Doctor of Ministry from Birmingham Theological Seminary.

After seminary, Tom served as pastor at the First Presbyterian Church, Soddy Daisy, Tenn.; the Locust Presbyterian Church, Locust, N.C.; planted and pastored the Carolina Presbyterian Church, Locust, N.C.; the New Covenant Presbyterian Church, Manning, S.C.; and came to be the missions pastor at Briarwood Presbyterian Church in August 1983.

  1. Tip Killingsworth says:

The first time we were over here as missionaries of Briarwood, Tom was our link. Now, that we’re back planting a church, we are reminded of Tom’s loving support. When the Lord takes us home we’d love to have a testimony and ministry history like Tom’s. Kathy we’re sorry for your loss but know that it won’t be long before we’re all singing praises together before the throne of the Lord who loved us and gave His life for us. We just want to continue Tom’s legacy of seeing the world reached for the Saviour, as quickly as possible. Laurie and I love you and all our special friends at Briarwood!
