Bryan Chapell to Teach at Knox Theological Seminary
By

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – 2/28/2013 – The President of Knox Theological Seminary, Dr. Luder Whitlock, and the Board of Directors are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Bryan Chapell as Distinguished Professor of Preaching. As the newest Distinguished Professor at Knox, Chapell will teach an integral piece of the Knox core curriculum and help strengthen the ethos and culture as a seminary that revels in grace and seeks to cultivate gracious servants of the Word.

Dr. Chapell’s responsibilities will include teaching the introductory homiletics courses to master’s-level students and also contributing to the biblical preaching and teaching track in the Doctor of Ministry program. He will help set the tone not only for how preaching is taught, but also for how Knox envisions Christian worship, holiness by grace, and the daily practice of the Christian life.

“Few people understand the rhythm of gospel-driven Christianity and its effects on Christ-centered preaching like Dr. Bryan Chapell,” said Interim Dean of Faculty Dr. Michael Allen. “For these reasons—dear to our convictions about being a Christ-centered, gospel-driven, mission-focused seminary—we couldn’t be more excited about Dr. Chapell joining the faculty.”

Dr. Chapell holds a BSJ degree from Northwestern University, an MDiv from Covenant Theological Seminary and a PhD from Southern Illinois University. He presently serves as president emeritus and an Adjunct Professor of Practical Theology at Covenant Theological Seminary where he served as President from 1994-2012.  His teaching career began at Covenant Seminary in 1984 after ten years in pastoral ministry. Prior to becoming President at Covenant, he served for six years as Vice President of Academics and Dean of Faculty.

After a long and distinguished career in academics, Dr. Chapell announced in January that he accepted a call to return to pastoral ministry and serve as senior pastor of Grace Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Peoria, Illinois.

The years spent as a pastor and seminary president have provided valuable insights for training up the next generation of pastors and ministry leaders. Dr. Chapell’s books are used in many seminaries today, including: Christ-Centered Preaching, Christ-Centered Worship, Ephesians, The Promises of Grace, In the Grip of Grace, Using Illustrations to Preach with Power, Each for the Other, The Wonder of It All, 1&2 Timothy: To Guard the Deposit (with R. Kent Hughes), Holiness by Grace, the children’s book I’ll Love You Anyway and Always, and Praying Backwards: Transform Your Prayer Life by Beginning in Jesus’ Name.
